The AMSA-KP Education and Advocacy Fellow (EAF) is a unique opportunity for a physician-in-training to spend a year supplementing their formal medical education by engaging deeply with critical issues such as access to affordable, high-quality health care, global health equity, diversity in the health care workforce, and medical professionalism. The EAF serves multiple roles within the American Medical Student Association, working closely with staff and national leaders to enhance educational programming and advocacy initiatives across the organization.

Candidates are not required to have extensive experience in teaching, curriculum design, or grassroots organizing. However, they must demonstrate enthusiasm and a strong motivation to learn and develop into leaders in these areas over the course of the fellowship.

The experiential education provided through this fellowship enables the EAF to take on leadership roles and contribute to the organization’s strategic direction. Fellowship objectives include skill development in grassroots organizing, leadership, strategic planning, and advocacy.

As part of a collaboration with Kaiser Permanente, AMSA is pleased to offer a community-focused rotation for the EAF in Northern California.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing a visible presence in AMSA’s activities, including chapter visits, regional conferences, the AMSA Annual Convention, organizing initiatives, and advocacy campaigns.
  • Leading two or more major projects to engage students and strengthen advocacy efforts. These projects will align with AMSA’s strategic priorities, enhance AMSA’s presence among physicians-in-training, and contribute to membership growth.
  • Producing a monthly newsletter to inform AMSA members about educational and advocacy opportunities and events.
  • Assisting with grant proposals as needed.
  • Providing support to AMSA’s various campaigns and committees while building relationships with medical education and advocacy organizations in the U.S. and internationally. Examples include the AAMC, CIR, NPA, PNHP, and AACOM, among others working on initiatives aligned with AMSA’s mission. The EAF’s projects, presentations, and training sessions will be developed in collaboration with AMSA leadership and staff.
  • Collaborating directly with the AMSA National President, Chief Executive Officer, and staff to design and implement educational programming that addresses topics not traditionally covered in medical school curricula. Responsibilities include delivering presentations, managing the poster session at the AMSA Annual Convention, and supporting advertising and marketing initiatives under the guidance of the Communications and Marketing team.
  • Assisting with the coordination and execution of the Scholars and/or Leadership Program(s).

Kaiser Permanente Initiatives:

  • The EAF will participate in a community-focused rotation in Northern California.
  • The EAF will engage in additional Kaiser Permanente programs as opportunities arise.
