AMSA Submits Comments Opposing Proposed Rule on Public Charge Grounds

Sterling, Va., December 10, 2018 – The current administration has proposed changes to the definition of “public charge”, expanding it to include the use of public benefits such as Non-Emergency Medicaid, Medicare Part D Low-Income Subsidies, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), public housing, and other essential welfare programs. As future physicians, we are deeply concerned about the serious impact this proposed rule would have on the health and well-being of immigrant communities.

AMSA firmly opposes this rule change and instead advocates for greater protections for immigrants and their families, safe access to critical health and nutrition services, the reunification of immigrant children with their families, and a clearer pathway to permanent residency and citizenship for all immigrants.

AMSA has submitted official comments to the government, strongly opposing this proposed regulation.
