Sterling, VA – December 12, 2016 – The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) has launched a new Leadership Program designed to complement medical school curricula by providing essential professional development and training beyond the classroom. Recognizing the need for comprehensive preparation that extends beyond clinical expertise, AMSA developed this program to help medical students bridge the gap between medical knowledge and the non-clinical skills necessary for a successful career.
Medical schools focus on training physicians-in-training to diagnose and treat patients, but do they adequately prepare future doctors for the professional challenges ahead? Beyond the core medical responsibilities, physicians must navigate interpersonal dynamics and business aspects that can be overwhelming without proper guidance.
“The classroom teaches us how to become physicians – that’s why we’re there. But we don’t know what we haven’t been taught. That’s exactly why AMSA developed this program – to help students expand their skill sets beyond the classroom and into their careers as emerging leaders in medicine,” said Kelly Thibert, DO, AMSA National President.
AMSA’s Leadership Program is an eight-week series featuring live and on-demand webinars, online reading materials, and knowledge assessments. The program covers key topics such as effective communication, time management, and financial literacy, equipping medical students with leadership, professional, and non-clinical skills essential for navigating their careers.
This program is available at no cost to all domestic medical student AMSA members. Interested members must register to secure their place in this inaugural launch. Learn more and sign up at http://www.amsascorecard.org/events/new-amsa-leadership-program/.
