American Medical Student Association Stands in Solidarity with the LGBTQ Community

Sterling, VA – June 12, 2016 – The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) condemns all acts of violence. We uphold the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” These values were not upheld today, as seen in the tragic events at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. While we continue to learn more about this horrific attack, its impact is already deeply felt across the LGBTQ community, especially during this month of Pride.

As we have done before, AMSA will continue to advocate for legislation, community programs, and education from health-care professionals regarding gun safety. We remain committed to pushing for CDC funding to support research on gun violence as a public health issue. We will persist in calling for strong federal violence prevention laws, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

As future physicians, AMSA members have always stood with the LGBTQ community, recognizing that discrimination based on gender and sexuality is rooted in sexism and heterosexism. We stand firmly against all forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity and remain dedicated to eradicating bigotry, hatred, and fear. Our resolve is unwavering, and we will continue proving that love always wins.
