AMSA Program to Help Students Navigate Residency Application Process

One of the program’s major benefits is an assessment tool that helps medical students become more aware of their own strengths and challenges

Sterling, VA – The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the largest and oldest student-run medical association in the U.S., has launched the Applied Match Preparation program to help medical students navigate the residency application process.

The residency application process is widely regarded as complex, time-consuming, and stressful. According to Joshua Caulfield, AMSA’s executive director, the best approach is one that is well-informed and strategic. To support students in this critical phase, AMSA has partnered with J3Personica, a New Jersey-based organization specializing in identifying key characteristics of successful resident physicians. Together, they have developed a customized self-awareness assessment designed specifically for medical students.

“Applying for residency is the most pivotal moment in a physician’s career,” said Alan Friedman, MA, CEO of J3Personica. “Through this program, students will receive objective, unbiased insights into their personality traits after completing the assessment.” By enhancing self-awareness, students can strengthen their application strategies, interview skills, and personal statement development.

“Our goal is to ease the stress associated with the Match,” said AMSA’s national president, Kelly Thibert, DO, MPH. “With expert coaching, AMSA’s Self-Awareness Assessment Tool, and a suite of additional resources, this program provides all the essential components to make the residency Match process as seamless as possible.”

The Applied Match Preparation program is exclusively available to AMSA members and includes personalized coaching, instructional videos, podcasts, and articles to guide students through the residency application process.
