AMSA Opposes Nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court
Sterling, Va., July 10, 2018 – On July 9, 2018, President Trump announced his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by Justice Anthony Kennedy. In the coming months, the U.S. Senate will conduct confirmation hearings followed by a vote on whether to approve his appointment.
The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) has consistently upheld that all individuals should have access to quality, affordable health care, regardless of age, gender, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, or pre-existing conditions. Additionally, AMSA firmly supports a woman’s right to obtain a legal, safe, and voluntary abortion.
Judge Kavanaugh’s judicial record raises significant concerns. He has previously supported restricting abortion access, including a case where he ruled against facilitating abortion services for a pregnant teenage immigrant in federal custody. He also dissented from a decision upholding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), signaling potential hostility toward health care protections. His confirmation could pose a direct threat to Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that safeguards a woman’s right to abortion, as well as the future of the ACA, particularly protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions.
AMSA strongly urges the Senate to reject Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination and calls on its members to contact their Senators and oppose his confirmation.
