As Open Enrollment Launches, AMSA Educates Members, Patients

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 1, 2013

Sterling, VA – The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the nation’s oldest and largest independent organization of physicians-in-training, has been advocating for quality, affordable health care for over 60 years. AMSA welcomes the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and encourages individuals and employers to explore the affordable coverage options now available.

Starting this week, all U.S. citizens can purchase new health insurance plans that align with their needs and budgets. The Health Insurance Marketplaces provide coverage for doctor visits, hospitalizations, maternity care, emergency room visits, and prescriptions. Preventive services are covered at no cost, and no one can be denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Those who enroll by December 15, 2013, will have coverage starting January 1, 2014.

“As physicians-in-training, we have a critical role in guiding patients through the open enrollment process and helping them understand its many benefits,” said Dr. Nida Degesys, AMSA National President. “AMSA members are part of the medical community dedicated to ensuring that our population receives full health coverage.”

The ACA represents comprehensive health care reform, focused on expanding coverage, reducing costs, and maintaining high standards of care. The Affordable Health Care for America Act aims to extend coverage to 96 percent of Americans and includes a public health insurance option. AMSA supports expanding access and coverage, advocating for a public option and increased investments in primary care physician workforce development.
